ABOUT US

A LIVING LEGACY

Welcome to The COOP, the campus store and official bookstore for the Harvard and MIT communities!

ESTABLISHED
in 1882

The COOP is not only the oldest and largest university bookstore in the country. It is deeply rooted in the tradition and the fabric of the Harvard and MIT communities with a long history of supporting student groups and initiatives. The Coop, as a cooperative, is owned by its members, yet open to all. All members of the Harvard & MIT communities are eligible to join and enjoy a 10% member discount.

COMMUNITY
FIRST

The COOP of the future will build on its storied history and will continue to evolve, enhancing the value we provide and reimagining what it means to be a member. The vision is dedicated to curating experiences that captivate and unite — a new model of modern retail and community engagement, leveraging innovative collaborations, products, and spaces, all designed to spark new ideas, forge meaningful connections, and strengthen our community.

Swing by the COOP, online or at any of our 7 stores, and see what’s waiting for you (spoiler: it’s more than just books).

THE COOP’S MISSION:

TO FOSTER INTENTIONALLY CURATED EXPERIENCES FOR THE HARVARD & MIT COMMUNITIES.

A SHARED LEGACY

We are reclaiming its original name, the Harvard Cooperative Society, as a society that reflects today’s inclusive ideals and offers mutual assistance to the community. The new COOP exists to serve its core community: the students and alumni, alongside those who feel an affinity to the schools and visit from near and far. The new Coop has the potential to embody the concept of  “ONE HARVARD + MIT.”

It will become a transformative space for interaction, the exchange of ideas and knowledge, inspiration, well-being, fun and leisure. It will become an enabler brand that brings everyone together through engaging experiences.
